Dianna Frid: The Forces That Shape Them
Opening reception: Thursday, June 4, 6 to 8 p.m.
Dianna Frid makes works that stem from existing images, diagrams and places. These existing things are submitted to vivid material and formal shifts that allow for new empirical experiences of the familiar. For her project in the gallery, Frid made works that acknowledge the existing glass panes that separate the gallery from the lobby by making the space a penetrable vitrine that positions itself within a larger atrium.

Caroline Picard @ mini dutch (and some sad news)
Opening Saturday, May 30th from 7-10pm
Show runs until Sunday, June 28th
Reading on Sunday, June 14th, from 3-6pm
Caroline Picard is working a new novel entitled "Happy Endings." This work-in-progress is about a group of hipsters living in Philadelphia and the events which led them to their current position in life. Entangling shallow personalities are complicated with transparent glimmers of childhood. The past becomes present, flattening out through night-time banter and its invariable avoidance of grief. The present has to lead somewhere.
To accompany "Happy Endings," Picard will show a series of "portraits" based on peripheral characters in the book. She combines aspects of drawing, gouache, and collage into beautifully delicate compositions. These abstract works serve as intuitive meditations of the characters she has constructed. A fleshy pallet with spikes of black, hot pink, blue and gold mix together to form intricate pattern work; in each painting, specific aesthetics of each individual are recomposed into an ornate and impenetrable surface. The gouache mingles with swatches of dollhouse wallpaper, connecting the character's present personas to their early years.
Fifty hand bound copies of the book will be available for purchase for $20.
And then, outside, on the stoop with all of his dumb bags all over again, everyone else inside because they aren't ready to leave yet, Tobias just starts to cry. Finally. And he can't get up even thou gh he feels stupid crying in the midst this city, and all its people—all its pretty people with funny clothes and fancy tattoos and stylish jokes—all of his fans, he can't help but cry and when he finally does he can't stop until Fletcher finally finds him in the eaves of a doorway to a store that's closed for the night. And then Fletcher finally hugs him and tells him that it's going to be alright. I promise, buddy, we'll get through this.
Caroline Picard is the Founding Director of The Green Lantern Gallery & Press and a Co-Editor for the literary podcast The Parlor . Her writing has been published in a handful of publications including Featherproof's mini books, NewCity, the Chicago Art Journal Review and Proximity Magazine. Her artwork has been shown at an array of alternative venues, not limited to COMA, artXposium and a solo show at Around the Coyote.

With four hours of business management for every hour of work in the studio, and a day job to pay the bills, what keeps one going through the years? You think, "Yeah, I can work 60, 70 hours a week, learn to do my own graphic design, figure out quickbooks and ask those people for money". It will pay off, is the unspoken idea. The metaphor that came to me was that this work is like push-starting a car. Exhausting, yes, but at some point, you'll get to the top of a hill. Right? More...

Can you describe how your career in Chicago began?
The thing that I loved about growing up as an artist in Chicago was the "Do-It-Yourself" vibe here. It was a relatively cheap place to live, and at least in music, there was always a place to perform, and there was always an audience. Coupled with that, there are a lot of great artists here. And there always have been. So it was a really great place to develop. More...

Trying to use up all the funnyYou know how some people seem to always have really ridiculous things happen to them? Do comedians have different experiences than normal .... or do they just see normal things in a different way? I've joked with other improv actors that we see the same thing other people see, but when we react to it or retell it, we just take it seven steps further. We just can't let it go until we've tried to use all the funny. More...

Planning is essential, plans are useless.
Like most good things in life, my career in the arts has happened largely by accident. When asked to give advice on how to get a job in the arts, I usually tell people to find ways to spend time doing what interests them and opportunities will present themselves. This advice draws from my own experience, so take it with a grain of salt. More...
