Dear Chicago Artists and Arts Organizations:
On behalf of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs,we would like to invite you to participate in the 14th annual Chicago Artists Month 2009, the citywide celebration of our vibrant and diverse visual arts community.
Each October, over 200 events ranging from exhibitions to open studio tours and neighborhood art walks take place at museums, galleries, cultural centers and other locations throughout the city. The primary goal of Chicago Artists Month (CAM) is to better acquaint the public with Chicago's artists and their work and to raise awareness of the quality and depth of our visual arts community.
This year, there are a few changes in the works that will affect not only the application process, but the way in which we will get the word out about your programs. Unlike years before, we will not be printing a comprehensive brochure listing all the events. Instead, we will be using the Chicago Artists Month website, in conjunction with www.ChicagoArtistsResource.org (CAR) and its calendar section, to promote the participating events in Chicago Artists Month 2009. We will develop and implement a marketing campaign that will drive the public to the website for the complete calendar of CAM events.
This year's theme, "Chicago Artists Month 2.0," refers to the concepts of interactivity and connectivity associated with Web 2.0, and highlights the ways in which artists interact with their audiences, interface with other artists, and use technology in order to create and distribute their work - locally, globally and virtually. Related programs might include exhibitions of interactive artwork, projects that involve artistic collaboration, or work that invites audience feedback, with or without the use of technology. You are encouraged (though not required) to use this theme as you plan your October program.
To participate, please go to www.chicagoartistsmonth.org for the participation guidelines and 2009 online "Intent to Participate" form. Then, submit your form by the May 15 deadline. Once approved, each participating organization will then be asked to add their own program content to the Chicago Artists Resource website.
From the submissions received, 12 programs will be selected as "featured programs" and will receive additional visibility. Please note: In order to be considered as a featured program, you must complete the "Intent to Participate Form" with all of the details of your event by the May 15 deadline. Programs that address this year's theme are most likely to be selected as features.
Lastly, we would like to invite you to a meeting on Thursday, April 23 at 3:30pm to go over these changes and procedures, as well as to provide time for your organization to network and find possible partners for your Chicago Artists Month program. The meeting will take place at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, 5th Floor.
Feel free to forward this invitation to others and to contact Leigh Fagin by email at leigh.fagin@cityofchicago.org with any questions.
We look forward to hearing about your plans for October and appreciate your support of Chicago's artists and Chicago Artists Month.
